There's nothing like a knock on the door at 300 a.m. to change your life forever. Gus Moore discovers how true this is when his ex-girlfriend blows in on an icy January night just long enough to dump "his problem" on the couch. From languid single slob to competent single parent, Gus's metamorphosis over the next six years is remarkable. All is going swimmingly for Gus and his son, Sam, until two women complicate their lives Sarah, with whom Gus has an unsatisfactory friends-with-benefits relationship, and Maureen, his son's bipolar mother, who has decided she wants back into her child's life. Maureen's illness is a subtextual presence that eventually steers the course of the novel. Refreshingly, Gus does not have the stereotypical Mr. Mom awkwardness of being a single parent (although he does "outsource the Jesus stuff" to the mother across the street), and there is no predictable "happy couple works it out" ending.

Fun, quirky humor keeps the storyline interesting, as does the protagonist Gus, a self-employed computer programmer, who works from home. Gus suddenly has to adapt himself to being a father, exhibits a unique and humourous ability to find solutions to the unexpected problems he encounters in his new-found fatherhood. Five years later, Gus' world is turned upside down when his child's mother suddenly appears on the scene. Serious issues must be confronted. His son's safety and welfare becomes Paramount, as Gus struggles with buried emotions from the past. This novel confronts the effects of bi-polar personality disorder and it's impact upon relationships. Definitely worth reading!

Total fantasy, and yet I enjoyed it. Gus finds himself suddenly in possession of an unexpected baby. Because he is financially flush and is basically, a good person, he immediately morphs into Super Dad. Although he had been estranged from his own family for a while, he becomes the hero of his little home and his neighborhood. He's drawn to complicated women with psychological and emotional problems and hasn't figured out birth control with much success, but still, you have to root for him. I couldn't wait to see if he could resolve all the loose ends of his life.
The story held my attention and was well written. I do wish, however the author had left politics out of it. As a conservative, I could have enjoyed the story much more had I not felt the jabs thrown, blaming the ill manners of others on conservative ideology. There are plenty of ill mannered folks on both sides of the aisle and was not necessary to the story.
In Sunflowers, Melodie Starkey has written a story that brings her characters to life, with all the challenges that life offers. Single male parenthood, tangled and negative family relationships, lost and then realized motherhood ... each character's demons and delights are very well cultivated in this poignant novel. Issues addressed through the story line are right to life, abandonment, parental rights, bipolar disorder, and economic disparity. The author deals with mental illness and its effects on individuals and families with empathy, knowledge, and depth. The children in the story are not just miniature adults, but true children, with their own set of emotions and perceptions. This book held my attention for a full day, as I could not put it down and needed to read to the end once started. I would highly recommend this book for readers interested in the many choices faced by ambivalent expectant parents and families facing mental illness.
I loved this and could not put it down, I think I finished it in about 4 hrs. It is well written, and it kept me guessing what was going to happen until the last few pages. One thing I liked is that the author 'completed the story'. Some leave you hanging, but this one left me satisfied that I knew the whole story.
Ok, who is ready for the best "wake up and find out you're a dad" story EVER?! Written with pathos and humor, I loved every minute of this book and even the sad parts were satisfying because of the awesome character development. Reads like soft butter, curl up or stretch out in your favorite spot and lose yourself in Gus & Sam's family life. Like the gal used to say in the old Irish Spring soap commercial, "Manly, yes, but I like it, too!" I will look for this author again!!! Guys, don't be afraid to give this a shot, from the dialogue to subject matter, the struggle is real.
This book is about a man who becomes an instant father, and what a father he is. Every child should be so lucky.

His ex-girlfriend knocks on the door one night, and dumps a bundle of what looks like laundry on his sofa. He unwraps it and finds a baby who is about 4 months old. The man may be a talented software designer but he is a genius father, and I only wish he was one of my neighbors. He is now one of my favorite book characters.

I don't want to spoil the book except to say that if a story about deep enduring love is what you are looking for, then you've found it. Although this book does not have a conventional happy ending, I was so glad that I read it, and I'll remember it and think about it.

"This was his child. Everything this child learned or experienced was his responsibility, starting right at this minute."
In some ways this reads like a real breezy book - characters cope with the chaos life sometimes bring with cool, sometimes snarky dialog. I must say that the author has a real gift for this type of dialogue, for the book is very entertaining.

The characters come across as a little waffly, though. Father and son characters are very strong. Significant women, not so much. Author vacillates between portraying a strong woman, and then turning that character into a weak woman. Very confusing.

Also book ends very abruptly.
